10 Ways to Love Mornings

Mornings can be a sacred time full of insight and peace, but for a lot of us mornings are more cold, rushed and stressful than anything else. Here are some ways to make waking up a little easier and more productive.

1. Get a routine

Eliminate decisions in the morning by having a routine. The less brain power we have to use first thing will actually allow us to be more productive in the mornings and more alert when we need to start making decisions that count. Choose a time to wake up and what you want to do or not do each morning and do that every single morning. Over time it will become second nature.

2. Don't over estimate the power of coffee

Coffee blocks the effects of adenosine by overriding our want to sleep during the day. You actually don't have much adenosine in the mornings so your morning coffee isn't actually waking you up and is better saved for early afternoon. Drink water instead! It wakes you up and cleanses toxins from your body. Think of it as an internal bath every morning. I drink a warm cup of water with a slice of ginger and lemon to cleanse my body.

3. Get your nutrition

Don't skip breakfast! Your body spent all night working hard to renew itself and needs more fuel to keep going. Your mind might sleep but your body never stops working. Eat a good breakfast with fiber, protein and whole foods. Take a TBSP of black strap molasses to give your body iron, manganese, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and B6.

4. Indulge

Add in something indulgent to your routine. Maybe that's a long hot shower, a yoga session, time to read a chapter of your favorite book, anything that makes you feel pampered each morning. I'd also add, get a great robe! One that you love and wish you could live in. Stay in that throughout the mornings and watch your mornings feel more like a spa visit than waking up for work.

5. Change your attitude

Waking up doesn't have to be dreadful. If you make your morning routine peaceful and about having me-time it can be something you look forward to.

6. Clean the house the night before

There's nothing less motivating than waking up to a dirty house. That's just one more thing on your to-do list. There's also so much peace that comes with waking up to a clean home.

7. Get some light

Open up the windows and let some natural light in. Your internal alarm clock is very sensitive to natural light, so if you're getting ready in the dark it'll be really hard for you to wake up.

8. Go slow

Wake up with enough time to not have to rush through your morning. Enjoy the process of waking up slow every morning.

9.  Spend time meditating

For me this includes spending time reading my bible. Take a few minutes to ground yourself in who you are and what you want out of life. Be calm before you have to start kickin butt getting things done.

10. Still tired?

If you're sleeping deeply for long hours and still waking up tired that's an indication something isn't right. Look at your diet and make sure you're eating in a way that sets up your body for success. Changing your diet could be the key to waking up with energy!
